of deceitful, corporate rogues, who have a destructive mania for dollars and little to no interest in nation building.

Germany (and Italy under Mussolini) modernised and moved forward materially at a great pace. The USA is moving forward into total, post-materialist decline at a great pace, with some people anticipating a barbaric, new Dark Age and others a new time of enlightenment and grace.

Today's projections of the denied "shadow" are very different, therefore, from those of the 1930s and 40s. Then it was the Jewish moneylender that was the scapegoat enemy who was said to be holding people back from getting on in life; now it is a pyjama-clad terrorist that is said to be bringing the good life to an end - especially the good life of the Jews in Palestine/Israel. And, as you know, both the Jews and the Palestinians are descended from Abraham.

WE ARE REBELS AT HEART

What Hitler and Bush do have in common is their pseudo-messianic appeal to nominal Christians. Perhaps nominal Christians feel obliged to love Jesus and resent the freedom of those who are not under this obligation - enough to want to kill them.

I understand that Sigmund Freud had some such idea and developed it into a thesis to explain the persecution of the Jews. I had no success in tracking down the thesis in the one book I have by Freud in my bookshelf - The Future of An Illusion - but I did read this by Freud, which I thought might interest you:

"[It] has become clear that civilization cannot exist principally or solely in wealth itself and the means of acquiring it and the arrangements for its distribution; for these things are threatened by the rebelliousness and destructive mania of the participants in civilization."

FROM PROJECTION TO LOVE

Seriously, nominal and even regular church-going Christians are noted for the way in which they project their inner devils of rebelliousness and destructive mania on to others. I believe this is because the image of Jesus crucified and resurrected goes to the bottom (yes, Freud, the bottom) of our human discontent with worldly trappings. It awakens in us an irrepressible longing for freedom from imposed necessity; but also, to the extent that we do not rationally believe in the possibility of the freedom, the image draws forth a rebellion, which we then project on to us, often without even recognising its source in ourselves. This process of awakening, denial and projection Freud called the return of the repressed.

I further believe that the connection between the crucifixion of Jesus and the crucifixion of the divine in us and the Earth will become increasingly obvious as the breakdown of the Earth systems and the I.O.U. debt and guilt economies continues.

The image of Jesus still nailed to a cross in effigy, as a would-be brother and friend, is branded on all our souls. As such, it represents the central item of unfinished business for each of us individually and for the world. I believe this precisely because the crucifix image awakens the deep-seated rebelliousness and destructive mania that Freud, for one, pointed to. And the awakening is most devilishly resisted in those who try hardest to accommodate themselves to assumed worldly responsibilities and material necessity, quite falsely in the name of Jesus.

We are now more than ever before individually and collectively challenged to recognise how the crucifix image causes desolation unless and until it is taken to heart, and transformed, for the raising of the divine in everybody, right through to the Earth body. To the extent that we of the historically Christian "West" fail to do this, to that extent the devils of our inner discontent will go on being projected on to terror-able people "out there". With devastating boomerang effect.

We are dependent on shared electricity, communication, water and other infrastructure utilities, and we are therefore unavoidably vulnerable to attack from those whom we have turned into scapegoats. There is no way of stopping them getting back at us. This must surely be obvious from what is happening in the birthplace of Jesus, where Zionist Jews, ancestrally relatives of Jesus one and all, have taken to persecution like the nominal Christians in Hitler's Germany.

From what is happening to the Palestinians, the Afghanis and the Iraqis, and from what happened in New York and Washington on 9.11, it is obvious: our human survival - and with that our victory over necessity
